NOTES

Routledge printed nearly 1300 titles in their Railway Library series beginning in 1848. Frequently sold near train stations and other hubs, they were intended for traveling reading, and many did not survive the journeys. Routledge used eye-catching covers to entice travelers, hence the macabre cover. The title story led to national cemetery reform movement. BAL 3340.
