NOTES
James Haldane Stewart Lockhart (1858-1937) occupied a number of posts as a British colonial official in China and Hong Kong. While living in Hong Kong, Lockhart became fluent in Cantonese, developed an expertise in Chinese literature, and published several books and articles on the topic. He also studied Chinese numismatics and assembled a personal collection of Chinese coins; the book described here is one of several works he authored on the topic.
