NOTES

This work is Vol. IX of the Archaeological Survey of Western India, and is one of several such reports on various aspects of the archaeological survey work conducted by Henry Cousens in Gujarat, India.

The Archaeological Survey of India was founded by Alexander Cunningham in 1861, although systematic archaeological excavation in India began in the late 1700s. Scottish archaeologist James Burgess (1832-1916) became Director General of ASI in 1886, during which time he established several new publications to release the Survey's findings. He also worked closely with Henry Cousens (1854-1933), a fellow Scot, archaeologist, and photographer, to produce reports on the surveys that Cousens lead. Cousens worked for the ASI for nearly thirty years, creating detailed plans, photographic records, and written descriptions of archaeological sites in India and Pakistan that, in many cases, had never before been formally described.
