NOTES

Chevalier was engineer and liberal economist, as well as an advocate for Saint-Simonian thought. Chevalier was commissioned by the French government to travel to the United States for the purpose of studying transport systems. His writings, which he originally had published in "Journal des Debats", belong in the tradition of de Tocqueville and Beaumont, offering observations on all aspects of early American politics and economics.
