NOTES

The first French edition of selections from Stein's modernist novel, The Making of Americans: Being a History of a Family's Progress. Stein's novel has a notoriously difficult publication history: a portion of the work was printed in Ford Maddox Ford's transatlantic review in 1924, before being released in its entirety by McAlmon's Contact Press in 1925 (in a limited edition of 500 copies). After its 1925 publication, there was no other full and complete english language edition released until 1966. The present edition represents the first publication of Stein's work in a language other than English, and was also one of the first works published by Éditions de la Montagne (founded by Hugnet in the same year).
