Small open tear to the upper corner of p. 811. Small closed tear to the margin of p. 825; small open tear to upper right corner to p. 829. An example of the variant in which pages 820 and 821 are correctly numbered.

John Toland wrote the life of Milton printed in Volume 1, which is signed and dated: I.T. Sept. 3. 1698. K.A. Coleridge suggests "The edition is commonly known as 'Toland's,' but he was not the editor. He remarked elsewhere that he would have omitted several of the works."

First complete edition of Milton's prose, with first edition of John Toland's life in volume 1, also published separately the next year.
