NOTES

The descriptive essays on Picasso and Matisse first appeared in Alfred Stieglitz's Camera Work, in the August 1912 edition devoted to Picasso and Matisse. These represented Stein's first published works, and were first collected in book format with this edition released in 1933. Also included are the two short stories A Long Gay Book and Many Many Women.
