Title vignette, final vignette and 6 plates after etchings by Käthe Kollwitz. O. Felsing printed the heliogravures and vignettes after the etchings and lithographs of the cycle Ein Weberaufstand ( A Weaver's Revolt), which was created between 1893 and 1897 and inspired by Hauptmann's play. The etching Kollwitz originally intended as the final sheet for the A Weaver's Revolt cycle, You Bleed from Many Wounds, O People ( Aus vielen Wunden blutest du, O Volk) is reintroduced to the cycle for this publication, appearing after the closing lines of the text. The early etching Mann mit niedrigem Hut served as a template for the title vignette.
Germanist Harry Steinhauer's copy, with a previously tipped-in sheet stating it was from his friends and colleagues, and signed by 11 of them, including Germanists John T. Waterman, Stuart Atkins, Frank J. Tobin, Clifford A. Barraclough, and Roselinde Konrad.
Harry Steinhauer (1905-2006) was Professor Emeritus and Chair of the department of Germanic and Semitic Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He edited and translated numerous volumes of German literature, including Twelve German Novellas (UC Press).
