Collection of three Francis Wyndham articles clipped from the London Review of Books from 1982, 1984 and 1988, inscribed to Rolland Comstock, and a handwritten and signed letter from Wyndham to Comstock dated 1989. Francis Wyndham (b. 1924) is an English essayist and short story writer who began publishing fairly late in life; his first collection of stories appeared in 1974. He won the Whitbread First Novel Prize in 1987, at the age of 63. Report of the Select Committee on the "amount and character of the expenditures which have been made by the Government in satisfaction of bounty land claims allowed by the state of Virginia." The claims were for land grants made by Virginia to members of the militia who had served in the revolutionary war. These lands were located in what is now the states of Kentucky, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin. Included among the articles are: Remarks on the debates in Congresss, particularly on the timidity of the language held towards France, A letter to the infamous Tom Paine, in answer to his crutal attack on the Federal Constitution, and on the conduct and character of General Washington. 8" x 5". Heavy foxing on front page, else pretty clean, this is an original issue that was bound up about 200 years ago and subsequently disbound back to it's original form. William Cobbett (9 March 1763 - 18 June 1835) English pamphleteer, farmer and journalist, born in Farnham, Surrey. Best known for Rural Rides(1830). Cobbett published controversial pamphlets, and generally tweaked the Establishment, in England and in America. His only consistency appears to have been a disdain towards the French.
