The Life of a South African Tribe
Neuchatel: Attinger Frères, 1912-13. First edition in English. VG- hardcovers . 2 vols.: 499, 574 pp. Volume I: The Social Life; Volume II: The Psychic Life. Extremely influential early ethnographic study of the Thonga people in what is today Mozambique and surrounding regions (e.g. the Natal). This edition was not only a translation of the 1st (French) ed. published in East Africa but a considerable enlargement of it. Internally very clean: paper is beginning to show some age-toning & both textblocks are modestly dust-soiled at the head but no other marking or soiling to the contents is evident & the paper shows little or no embrittlement. Original green cloth pictorial covers with black printed illustration & gilt cover & spine titles. Vol. II of this set is partially unopened. Bindings have a little bumping & other wear at edges with all lower corners moderately bumped. Tiny spots of dampstaining (a little more on Vol. II) & perceptible fading or rubbing to spine titles, although these are still quite legible. As usual, this set lacks the rare dustjackets. Reprinted numerous times but notably scarce in this edition & very uncommon in this condition. [Spines are green with gilt text.] Additional shipping and handling may be necessary for expedited/international orders.
