[PRAYER BOOK IN ARABIC AND PERSIAN]

[PRAYER BOOK IN ARABIC AND PERSIAN]

Unknown. Octavo, unpaginated. Hard cover ivory cloth boards with gilt decorations and no dust jacket. Good. This is an undated (but appears to be 19th century) Book of Prayer / Book of Hours written in Arabic and Persian. Not a Koranic text. The prayers themselves are written in Arabic in black ink, sprinkled with words and phrases in Persian, written in red. Calendar-like tables opening the right side of the book consist in combinations of Arabic letters and numbers, intersected with the 99 names of Allah and a number of various geometric shapes and forms which might have some "sacred geometry" meanings or astronomical references. The pages right after these tables are lined and left blank, presumably for user's notes, meditations, and commentaries. Inscribed by former owner in faded ink on the inside of front board. Binding is cracked in a couple of places, but all pages are together. Text is handwritten and is clean and unmarked. Light staining and foxing throughout, particularly strong on the inside of boards and end papers. Strong shelf wear to boards: fading and rubbing, scuffing around the edges, and the spine is strongly damaged with parts missing and the text is no longer visible. Shelved in Case #3.
