VG-. 4to in black-brown cloth, title on cover in gilt (simply "MAPS OF WASHINGTON" on cover). No DJ as issued. Moderate shelf and edgewear to boards; rubbing and fraying at all edges and folds, corners bumped, significant age toning to boards, significant moisture staining to rear board and spine. Age toning to textblock, minor deterioration to rear of block, may be mouse-chewed, or moisture deterioration. Foxing to endpages, and light foxing to rest of pages. Includes two of three fold-out maps tipped in on front endpage. On 6 pages after title page are paste-down newspaper cutouts from "The North American" (Feb 22, 1846), and "The Evening Transcript" (Jan 14, 1853), and an undated, unsourced article, describing sermons given in Pennsylvania, Boston, and New York, respectively. 1858. One page handwritten letter by President James Buchanan, written in Washington, dated 7 March, 1858. On a 7" x 6" piece of paper, backed onto a sturdier piece of paper. Two faded horizontal and two faded vertical creases. Some few letters and words have some smudging. The letter reads "My dear Madam, You ask for my autograph. This is indeed a small favor. Were it much greater it should be most cheerfully granted to promote the benevolent object of your solicitude. [parts of this sentence are illegible], I remain. One piece of paper, measuring approximately 3" x 3", with the autograph of Albert Gallatin, Secretary of the Treasury under President Jefferson, as well as one of the founders of the University of the City of New York. There is a small red stain to the upper left corner of the paper, which does not impact text, as well as a few smaller smudges. There is a cease about halfway through horizontally that impacts about 1/2" of the autograph page. It is attached to a larger piece of paper, measuring approximately 9" x 6". Shelved DI autograph folder.
