Four items belonging to Craig Wadsworth, relating to his time in the Rough Riders and his relationship to Theodore Roosevelt. 1. A 14 leaf leather-bound photo album, with gilt 'First United States Volunteer Cavalry / (Roosevelt Rough Riders) / 1898' to front cover. The first 12 leaves have one photo pasted to each side, with handwritten ink captions below, for 24 original photos. The 13th leaf has a handwritten ink recording of the history and movements of the 1st Regiment U. S. Volunteer Cavalry, or Rough Riders, taking both sides. The 14th leaf, while numbered in pencil, is blank. The majority of the photos are 13cm. x 10cm., although there is some minor variance. The largest is 14cm. x 11.5cm. 2. A Copy of 'The Rough Riders' by Theodore Roosevelt, New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1899, Signed flat by Theodore Roosevelt on the ffep, with the ownership name of 'Craig Wadsworth / Sergeant - troop K.' Small ink note on page one that reads 'Page 11 + 178.' in Wadsworth's hand, with pages 11 and 178 having a small handwritten arrow pointing to Wadsworth's name. Interestingly, he does not mark his name on page 263 in the Muster-out Roll. Octavo, xi, , 298 pages. VG-. Bound in publisher's mustard cloth, some mild uneven fading to boards, spine. Mild shelfwear to boards and spine, bumping to corners. 3. A copy of the 'Inaugural Souvenir, 1901', Press of W. F. Roberts, Washington DC, 1901. Large octavo, Unpaginated, G-. bound in publisher's brown paper covered boards with a small gilt eagle at center of the front board, the spine with a white tape as issued. Bottom third of spine missing, with wear to remaining parts of spine. Recto of frontispiece with ownership information 'Craig W. Wadsworth. Washington D. C. Sunday March 3 1901'. With frontispiece of McKinley & Roosevelt plus twenty inserted portraits of the Presidents as well as an engraved illustrated page of signatures of the Inaugural Committee. 4. A two page Typed Letter Signed by Theodore Roosevelt as President, with his hand corrections. Typed on White House letterhead, it is dated May 15, 1902 and addressed to Craig W. Wadsworth at the Knickerbocker Club in New York. It is inexpertly backed, with glue staining primarily to the left page, and water staining along the lower and right edge. Water-staining has caused some mild bleeding of the blue ink. The letter discusses that, "as a former member of the Rough Riders, Craig W. Wadsworth will be a representative of the United States and of President Roosevelt in London. Roosevelt gives Wadsworth advice on being a United States representative abroad." [LoC] A copy of the letter exists in the Library of Congress Manuscript Division, but does not include Roosevelt's hand corrections. Wadsworth joined the U.S. Diplomatic Service as third secretary to the American Embassy in London, taking up his position there in August of 1902.
