A clerk’s “Probate Act Book”, with multi-generational entries in at least two hands recording the enactment of wills and testaments in the town of Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. Covers the years of 1661 to 1737, with discontinuity of documentary convention at year 1710. The first 18 leaves include single line entries of names and dates from the years 1661 to 1709. The subsequent 22 leaves (double-sided) include paragraph-length descriptions in the probate act convention, arranged chronologically. The 11 leaves at the end of the register include an index of the entries in the second section, arranged by name. All entries in Latin, with clerk notations in margins. Each entry in the second section states residence as “S[anctae] Mariae infra Oppidum Salop” – indicating that these were entries for the wills and testaments of individuals in the Parish of St. Mary’s in Shrewsbury, Shropshire County. Comparison with records available online indicate that this could be the register maintained by Thomas and Francis Price, a father and son who both served as clerks during this time. RWO.
