In somewhat later red morocco with gilt borders, five raised bands on spine, gilt decorations in compartments; all edges gilt. Boards rubbed, particularly at spine. Front hinge cracked from the spine top extending about two inches. Clipping from contemporary review tipped in to front endpaper. Some scattered foxing. Good solid copy. INSCRIBED by author on title page to the British diplomat Charles Richard Vaughan, who had been appointed envoy-extraordinary and minister-plenipotentiary to the United States in 1825. With an autograph letter to Vaughan signed by Ranking tipped in. The letter, approximately 60 words, is dated March 30, 1830, and begs Vaughan to accept the gift of this book. Shelved in Case #12.
