A lot of three type 1 photos of the great horse racing champion Seabiscuit. All three capture moments in the infamous competition between “the ‘Biscuit” and War Admiral. The first is a 1938 9” x 7” photograph of Seabiscuit, in racing gear at a trot with jockey George Woolf riding. The photo was taken in the weeks leading up to the historic showdown with War Admiral at Pimlico. In very good condition. There are small creases in the margins at the the bottom corners of the photograph, and a slight age-toning throughout. The verso bears the stamp of Acme Newspictures, Inc. in purple, a notation in pencil, and pasted text that reads: “San Francisco -- Presenting Sea Biscuit, Great “Estern [sic] Horse, / in his usual running gear. There’s one exception. Up in this / picture George Woolf, who rode Sea Biscuit to an easy win / in the Bay Meadows Handicap. The Biscuit’s regular jockey is / Red Pollard, whom owner C.S. Howard banks on in the forthcoming / Sea Biscuit - War Admiral match race at Belmont.” The second photo measures 6.5” x 8.5” and depicts Seabiscuit and a seemingly nervous Red Pollard in the moments before the race at Belmont against War Admiral in 1938. In very good condition. There is slight warping at the bottom of the photo, and moderate age-toning throughout. The verso bears the black stamp of International News Photos, a notation in blue chalk, and pasted text that reads: “Belmont Park… All that “Seabiscuit” will / see during the match race against “War Admiral” / for $100,000 on Memorial day will be the course / in front of him. Thanks to the blinker being / adjusted here. Jockey Johnny “Red” Pollard, who / is up on the Biscuit here, will ride him in / the great event. Admiral’s admirers, however, / aver that Seabiscuit will also have an exclusive / view of their hero’s hind quarters.” The third photo, also from 1938, measures 6” x 7.5” and shows Seabiscuit’s owner, C.S. Howard, in the moments after trainer Tom Smith decided to pull Seabiscuit from a race against War Admiral at Belmont. In very good condition. The photo is pasted on card paper (measuring 6.5” x 8”), which is slightly warped on the right side vertical. Minimal soiling to the margins.
