NOTES

Kokoschka (1886-1980) was an Austrian artist and writer. His artistic interests centered on the human form, and he found support for this pursuit (and his early landscapes) from architect Adolf Loos beginning in 1908. By the 1920s, Kokoschka was traveling extensively and painting well-received landscapes. He returned to Vienna in 1931, where he met his wife, Olda Palkovska, and in 1935 the couple moved to Prague. In 1937, the Nazis classified Kokoschka’s work as degenerate art, and in 1938 Kokoschka and his wife fled to London. In the same year, his work was exhibited for the first time at the Buchholz Gallery in New York. He continued to exhibit in North America and western Europe in the decades following World War II. He died in Switzerland in 1980.
