Clown Painting
A brightly colored pastel on paper depicting a clown. Signed “Joan Erbe” in the lower right corner. Condition: very good to excellent. No apparent damage to artwork; the frame shows a few minor scratches and small dark patches. Matted and framed; not examined out of frame.

Joan Erbe (1926-2014) was born and spent her career in Baltimore, Maryland. Her parents encouraged her artistic interests when she was a child, and when she was in her 20s she received a scholarship to attend the Maryland Institute, where she studied portraiture. Her first solo exhibition was hosted by the Baltimore Museum of Art in 1966, and dozens more exhibitions at numerous institutions followed.
