Paris: La Villette, 1793. Two volumes; octavo. The first volume is 336 pages; the second volume is 451 pages. Both volumes are bound in contemporary full calf binding with gilt lettering and ornamentation on the spine and gilt ornamentation on the edges of the boards. The endpapers are marbled. A folding plate map of the east coast of the United States appears at the beginning of the first volume. The second volume includes three plates: a depiction of an Indian warrior, a folding plate depicting a British fortification, and a folding plate image and diagram of a fort at the end of the second volume. Also included with this lot are the title page of a Christie, Manson, and Wood catalogue for a 1926 auction of fine books, and a clipping, presumably from this catalogue, which lists these volumes as among the lots for that auction. In addition, the lot includes a typewritten letter, dated October 9, 1935, which discusses various English translations of the work and describes its historical significance at the time of first publication. Volumes condition: Good. Both volumes exhibit notable wear, including fraying at the foot and edges, loss of gilding, damage to labels, and water damage visible on end leaves and first several pages and final several pages of both volumes. Both volumes have clean text blocks. Letter and catalog sections condition: Good. All exhibit creases, minor tears and punctures, and yellowing consistent with age. The second page of the letter also has two closed tears along the horizontal crease and a partially open tear from the bottom of the page to the horizontal crease. These do not impact legibility.
