Boston: Samuel Jones, 1854. First Edition. Anti-Catholic book written by “one of the Roman Catholic Priests of Saragossa, Spain.” Title page indicates this is from the “forty-fifth thousand” copies printed. Anti-Catholic fears in the USA reached a peak in the nineteenth century when the Protestant population became alarmed by the influx of Catholic immigrants. Some claimed that the Catholic Church was the Whore of Babylon in the Book of Revelation. Hardcover, no dust jacket, in brown cloth with gilt lettering, embossed boards, front cover has gilt embossed dragon with the text “And Behold A Great Red Dragon Having Seven Heads and Ten Horns”. 408 pages.

8vo., 408pp.; VG-; bound in brown cloth, spine has gilt lettering; embossed boards, front cover has the embossed dragon gilded; marbled text block; bumping to corners, wear to boards, spine; pages 291-310 partly detached; name in ink on ffep; frontispiece with tissue-guard; ild scattered foxing; shelved front case.
