Sale held by the Parisian commissaire-priseur Charles Pillet, with Victor Le Roy & Charles Mannheim as experts. Count Nicolay, who purchased Villa San Donato in 1815, began the Demidoff art collections in Italy. His son Anatoly made important acquisitions from, among others, the collections of the Duc de Choiseul, Tallyrand, & the Duc de Berry. The auctioning of the collections began with sales in Paris in 1863, 1868, 1870, and finally, this sale, organized by his son Pavel.;
