[MANUMISSION] CERTIFICATE OF FREEDOM ISSUED IN MARYLAND

Saint Mary's County: 1815. Full manuscript document, form created in hand and completed in a different manuscript hand, and signed by Register of Wills of Saint Mary's County James Forrest. It certifies that Moses Barnes "was set free by the last will and testament of Col. Rich Barnes."

This certificate was issued to Moses Barnes, described as "of the height of five feet four & one half inches - aged about twenty three years of a dark complexion, he became free under the will aforesaid on the 1st day of January 1814. He was raised in Saint Marys County. The said nego [sic] has two scars on the left side of his face which appears to have been procured from a cut, a large scar on the left side of his breast occasioned by a seal, two scars about the right groin."
