NOTES

Massive set issued to commemorate the quincentenary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator. Includes essays on 16th and 17th-century Portuguese cartography. Compiled Avelino Teixeira da Mota (Portuguese naval officer and historian) and historian and cartographer Armando Cortesão. In his introduction to the 1987 reprint, historian Alfredo Marques commented "Portugaliae Monumenta Cartographica is without a shadow of doubt one of the greatest - if not the greatest - cultural achievement yet seen in Portuguese historiography - and even in the international historiography of the field".
