NOTES

Sabin 95072; Howes L329; Streeter Texas 1072; Raines page 109; First edition, first issue of an important early Texas work. Champ d'Asile,or Camp Asylum, was a very short-lived small colony of French refugee followers of the deposed Napoleon Bonaparte. It was founded with the permission of the United States in what was Spanish territory. It lasted for only six months in 1818 before the Spanish sent troops, upon which it was abandoned. "The book is a fanciful and idealized account of the Champ d'Asile." - Streeter.
