NOTES

Four volumes from the Mission Pelliot en Asie Centrale.

Paul Pelliot (1878-1945) was a French orientalist who led a major expedition to Xinjiang, China, between 1906 and 1909. Though the expedition is perhaps best known for Pelliot's visit to the famous library cave at Dunhuang, his first stop was at the archaeological site of Tumshuq (or Toumchouq), which was home to a particularly rich collection of clay Buddhist sculptures dating to the 4th-7th centuries. He also visited the ruins of two large, wealthy Buddhist temples known as Duldur Aqur (Douldour-Aqour) and Subeshi (Soubachi) near the ancient city of Kucha; these volumes provide reports and photographs from those portions of the expedition.
