NOTES

Three volumes from the series Reports from the Scientific Expedition to the North-Western Provinces of China under the Leadership of Dr. Sven Hedin. The Sino-Swedish Expedition.

Swedish explorer Sven Hedin (1865-1952) led several expeditions to Persia, Tibet, Inner Mongolia, and Xinjiang, China between 1893 and 1935. He was, in many cases, the first European traveler to make a thorough record of the sites he visited. Unlike many of the explorers who followed in his footsteps, Hedin was not primarily interested in the archaeology and history of the regions he visited, choosing to prioritize geographical and geological information instead. The maps he produced proved invaluable to subsequent expeditions, including those led by Aurel Stein.
