The first edition had 4 printings, each with small print runs. This is the first printing of the second edition and the fifth printing overall. This American second edition, fifth impression is made out of identical sheets, illustrations, and binding as the British impression, with only the publisher's name changed on the spine. With the upcoming 'The Lord of the Rings' publication in 1954/1955, Tolkien modified the story slightly, particularly chapter 5: 'Riddles in the Dark' relating to Gollum's obsession with the ring.;
