NOTES

This is a reprint of a series of articles from the Minneapolis Morning Tribune in April 1955, written by Victor Cohn. It documents the history of polio in America and the resolution by Dr. Jonas Salk. Cohn would later go on to be science editor of the Washington Post.;

After being legal partners in the 1920's, in 1938 President Roosevelt and Basil O'Connor formed the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (NFIP), which focused on supporting research to find a solution to the problem of poliomyelitis. Under O'Connor, the NFIP, known best as "the March of Dimes," mobilized volunteers to help fund research to develop the polio vaccines that ended the polio epidemics in the US. The NFIP was renamed the March of Dimes in 1979.;
