Acts Passed By Congress [Early Editions from Eleven Congresses, in Eighteen Books]

Hartford; Philadelphia; Washington City: Hudson and Goodwin; Francis Childs and John Swaine; [William Ross]; others, 1791 - 1826. First Editions, Mixed. A collection of eighteen books, representing the acts passed at eleven U.S. congresses. All are first editions, except the volume containing acts passed at the First Congress, which is an early 1791 re-print. All are in Good minus to Very Good minus condition, and most are in original boards.

Title: Acts Passed at a Congress of the United States of America, begun and Held at the City of New-York, on Wednesday the Fourth of March, in the year M,DCC,LXXXIX, and of the Independence of the United States The Thirteenth Hartford: Hudson and Goodwin, 1791; Early Re-Print. Octavo, [6], [8], [3] - 327 pages, [90] blank. In Good minus condition. Early calf, with morocco spine label and gilt lettering. Boards show significant warping to front and back covers. Moderate bumping to corners and significant wear to leather on spine (quires exposed). Moderate plus soiling to front and back covers. Adhesive tape to the spine label and at top edge of front cover. X-shaped gash to the leather on the back cover. Front and back boards are loose but attached to binding. Textblock has moderate uneven age-toning to edges. Numerous early 19th-century ink emendations to front pastedown and recto/verso of front free end paper. Mild soiling along edges of textblock interior (not impacting text) up to page 55. The last 90 pages are blank, and three have ink inscriptions from a previous owner ("Joseph Gallup").

Small octavo, [4], 291 pages, ii, [24], [4]. In Good condition. Bound in early calf, with tooled covers, morocco spine label with gilt lettering. Library sticker near tail of spine. Boards have light plus wear to edges and corners. Moderate wear/chipping to head/tail of spine. Leather cracked along joints of spine. Wear to spine label. Prominent damp-stain at bottom corner of back cover. Boards are loose but attached. Textblock shows moderate age-toning to edges. One prominent instance of damp-staining impacting the bottom and fore-edges. Light plus age toning throughout textblock. Light chipping to front free end page and title-page. A library bookplate appears on the front pastedown, another bookplate (largely removed) appears on the verso of the second free end page. Previous owner's inscription appears in ink at the top of the title-page.

Title: [Acts Passed at the Third Session of the Fifth Congress of the United States] [Philadelphia]: [William Ross]; Presumed First. Octavo, [missing pp. 241-280], 281-288 pages, [missing pp. 289-320], 321 - 561 pages, 26 pages, iv, [48]. In Fair condition. Original binding. Front board is missing and back board is loose from binding with creasing to corners and moderate plus soiling overall. Pages 281 - 288 and closing 80 pages are disbound. Textblock has light plus age-toning to untrimmed edges, with moderate curling and light chipping to edges, and significant ink emendations to last page of index. Appears to have been part of a volume that included sessions I - III of the Fifth Congress, which had the following pagination: 50 pages, [3], [52] - 240 pages, vii, [4], [244] - 561 pages, 26 pages, iv, [48]. None of sessions I or II remains intact, and this volume is lacking the title-page.

In Good minus condition. In the original wrappers. SESSION I: Covers show numerous ink emendations from previous owners. Moderate plus soiling to top and bottom edges and along spine of front cover. Moderate plus soiling to back cover and significant wear to paper along spine (quires exposed). Textblock has light plus age-toning and mild shelf-wear to untrimmed edges. Moderate soiling to last 20 pages of textblock. Multiple ink emendations to back free pastedown and inside of back cover (and to pages 4 and 5). The name of former owner Ralph Hunt appears on the inside of the front cover, and an ink inscription identifying the volume appears at the top of the first page. Lacking title-page. -- SESSION II: Covers show numerous ink emendations from prior owners. Moderate plus soiling overall. One tear to paper on spine (quires exposed). Significant chipping to top-right quadrant of front cover. Textblock has light plus age-toning and light wear to untrimmed edges.
