Four Type 1 Photos of Castro

1959. Four early type 1 photos of Castro shortly after the successful overthrow of the Batista regime. The first is a vintage 7” x 9” press photo that shows Castro delivering a speech to a jammed crowd in front of the Presidential palace in Havana. In very good condition, curling slightly with mild warping in the top left quadrant. Four faint tack-holes, one in each corner, appear in the margins, along with the faint indent of the number four written in now-erased pencil in the top-center margin. The verso has pasted text reading: “Fidel Castro, leader of Cuba’s Revolutionary / Forces, addressed Havana crowd in January and / defended executions of former Batista men.” The faded black stamp of Associated Press Wirephoto is partially obscured by pasted text. The second is a 7.5” x 9.5” photo showing Castro greeting and shaking hands with a crowd. In very good condition. Minimal age-toning to top-margin, and a faint crease confined to margin at the bottom-right corner. On the verso appears the stamp of Time Incorporated (creator), reproduction permission stamp (permitting use by American Heritage), and notations in red ink and pencil. The third item measures 7” x 7.5” and depicts Castro giving a press conference in Havana on January 22, 1959. In very good condition. Faint crease near bottom of image, slight wear to bottom edge in margins, and slight age-toning in top-margin. Verso has pencil notation and creator stamp for United Press International. The fourth item is a 7.5” x 9.5” photo of Castro seated at a press conference on January 18, 1959. In very good condition. Slight warping to photo, and minor development imperfection in image at top left corner. Verso has creator stamp for United Press International, and pasted text on yellow paper: “Holding his head, Cuban rebel leader / Fidel Castro speaks at a press conference here / Jan. 18th. A lung specialist examined the / ailing Castro late Jan. 19th and barred all / visitors from seeing him.
