A rare pamphlet of one of Douglas's most important speeches. According to Cecil K. Byrd, it's "the first public expression of his views on the Dred Scott decision. In it he accepted the decision and insisted that 'the whole principle of Popular Sovereignty and self-government is sustained and firmly established by the authority of this decision.' The speech was part of tge preliminary groundwork for re-election in 1858..." Douglas's Utah comments surprised those accustomed to his belief in non-intervention by the federal government in the territories, for he here supports punishment of the controversial Mormons whose polygamy had incensed the nation and advocates military force to remove Brigham Young.
