The first complete edition of Milton's prose, with the first edition of John Toland's life of Milton in vol. 1. Several letters are also published here for the first time. John Toland wrote the life of Milton printed in Volume 1, which is signed and dated: I.T. Sept. 3. 1698. K.A. Coleridge suggests "The edition is commonly known as ’Toland’s’, but he was not the editor. He remarked elsewhere that he would have omitted several of the works.

Half-title (pi1r with port. on verso) reads "Miltons historical and political works". The frontispiece portrait of Milton (pi1v) is signed: Gul. Faithorne ad vivum delin. et sculpsit. Actual place of publication from Wing.
