NOTES

Böckelmann was a jurist and professor of law, first at Heidelberg and later, beginning in 1670, at Leiden. He instituted new teaching practices that relied on shorter summaries of the Corpus Juris Civilis, rather than on the complete collection of texts. His Compendium Institutionem, one such summary, was in use into the 19th century.

This copy of the Compendium Institutionem is filled with meticulous annotations in a careful hand. Somewhat surprisingly, the annotator did not write his name in the volume, but he did write a shelf mark on the rear pastedown, indicating the precise physical location of the volume in his library. A 20th-century owner, J. Michael Taylor, placed his blind embossed book stamp on the title page of this volume.
