Serov (1865-1911), born in Saint Petersburg, Russia, to parents who were both composers, though his father died when he was still a young child. He received early artistic training in Paris and Moscow, and his first exhibited works received loud critical acclaim. Although he enjoyed painting landscapes, he met his greatest critical and financial success as a portraitist. In the decades since his death, too his portraits tend to meet with the greatest acclaim; he is recognized as one of the most significant portrait artists of his generation, and his works are particularly noted for the deeply personal insights they reveal about his subjects.
