NOTES

Rembrandt (1606-1669) was a Dutch painter and printmaker known first and foremost for his portraits and biblical scenes. His work was wildly popular in his own lifetime, and he continues to be known as one of the greatest and most recognizable artists of his generation. Following Rembrandt’s death, a story developed that the artist created this particular etching out of doors, while visiting the estate of Jan Six. It is known that he produced other works drawing inspiration from the same area.
