Early Edition of a cornerstone of the fundamental principles of hydrodynamics, the first was in 1771; Bossut's name is particularly attached to the experiments he conducted in the tanks of the École Militaire, with Nicolas de Condorcet and Jean le Rond d'Alembert, to determine the resistance that water opposes to the movement of ships (1775-1777).
He was the first full professor of the royal chair in hydrodynamics, he still provides lessons and public demonstrations twice a week at the start of the Revolution with the Fathers of the Oratory , rue Saint-Honoré in Paris.
Robert Fulton relied on his work. On August 9, 1803, it was in the presence of Bossut and other members of the Institute that Fulton operated the first steamboat on the Seine in Paris. [wikipedia]
