1910. SEPTEMBER 24 1910. The artist’s name appears inside the lower border of the image. Printed below the image lower left is “VOL XLVI NO 1” and lower right “SEPTEMBER 24 1910” with a “27” in the extreme right corner. The magazine’s title “Collier’s The National Weekly” largely obscured by Parrish’s bookish clown speaks to the magazine’s foothold in early 20th-century popular culture. From 1904 to 1910, Parrish was under exclusive contract to Collier's, which published his famed Arabian Nights paintings in 1906-07. Condition: fine. A signed original print by Grace Rhoades Dean entitled “The Grist Mill.” Born in Ohio, Dean (1878-1968) spent most of her career in that state, though she and her husband, who was also an artist, studied in Munich between 1910 and 1914. Following their return to Ohio from Germany, Dean taught art classes and exhibited her work widely at regional galleries and competitions. Matted and framed. Condition: Very Good. Limited edition color lithograph by Raphael Soyer. Signature and date in pencil in lower right corner. Edition number 2/150, also in pencil, in the lower left corner. Black and white with muted colors on face, hands, and sweater. Raphael Soyer (1899-1987) was born in Russia and arrived in the United States at the age of 10. He studied at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League. His work is in the permanent collections of numerous art museums, including the Whitney and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The edges of the painting are stabilized with black electrical tape, which appears to partially conceal several tears. Notes in the artist’s hand indicate that the costumes were intended for “Gypsies” (in the case of the sheet featuring three costumes) and “Hungarian Peasants” (in the case of the sheet with two figures). Maryland. A large sketch pad filled with more than fifty life studies by an unrecognized 20th century Maryland-based artist, Dick Kelih. One additional study, done on different paper, has been placed in the folio but not attached in any way. The first nine studies are painted; the rest are worked variously in charcoal, crayon, and graphite. They vary in completeness and level of detail, but all are produced in a loose, fluid style. Condition: good. A few pages have closed tears, and one has multiple closed and open tears. Some water staining to early pages, and all pages are yellowed with age. Dimensions 18.5 x 25 inches. More
Print by Elisabeth Claire Tournay (1731-1773) after a painting by Pierre-Louis Dumesnil the Younger (1698-1781). Tournay was a female engraver who spent her career in Paris, where Dumesnil also worked for most of his life. A copy of this print is currently in the collection of the Musee Carnavalet, Histoire de Paris in Paris, France. Matted and framed. Condition: Very Good.
