Photo is inscribed to Mrs Schellhase and signed by Miss Gish in ink. Condition is Very Good with little fading and some paper tape stuck to the back. Schellhase's Restaurant in Baltimore MD, owned by C H Otto Schellhase and Frieda Schellhase, operated from 1924 to 1980 and is "remembered for its heavy draperies and even heavier food." H.L. Mencken made it famous as the meeting place for his Saturday Night club. Mencken's influence led many in the world of the arts to gather there. Henry Fonda and Margaret Sullivan were married in Baltimore in 1931 and had their reception at Schellhase's. Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne ate there every night while touring in "The Taming of the Shrew." The walls of Schellhase's gave testimony to its popularity with theatre types, being covered in signed photos of the many Broadway and Hollywood performers who stopped there in the 1930s, '40s, '50s and into the 1960s. -Shelved in Schellhase binder [consignment]. 1929. A 3.25” x 5.25” type 1 portrait photo of Hemingway taken in 1929. In good condition. Paint has been applied to a portion of the background by a previous owner, some faint warping appears in the lower half due to application of adhesive to recto, and there is a barely visible crack in the image near the forehead. There are notations in pencil on the recto, two stamps in purple ink, and a newspaper clipping of the photo is affixed as well. Date given in pencil is “12/29/29.”. CX Consignment. shelved case 0. Edo Period Japanese fan leaf depicting a shogun's court. In Good minus condition with Good plus frame. Frame has light scratching throughout, with moderate bumping to corners and light staining. Baseboard is cracked horizontally in two places that span the entire frame. Fan print has five vertical scratches to the left side, each measuring 3 in. Light paint chipping and cracking throughout. 17th century iron shears from Toledo, Spain with ornamental engravings, measuring 10.5 in. long. Missing finial at end of one handle. Thread Snippers measuring 7 in. long. Severely rusted, with the point of one blade has broken off. Bone comb measuring 3.5 in. x 2 in. Moderate soiling overall, 1.6 in.-long segment of broken off of comb (still present).
