Schellhase's Restaurant in Baltimore MD, owned by C H Otto Schellhase and Frieda Schellhase, operated from 1924 to 1980 and is "remembered for its heavy draperies and even heavier food." H.L. Mencken made it famous as the meeting place for his Saturday Night club. Mencken's influence led many in the world of the arts to gather there. Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne ate there every night while touring in "The Taming of the Shrew." 1853-2004. The collection consists of 432 primarily 20th century to the present books pertaining to the Ikebana style of flower arranging, with the majority in Japanese and a small portion published in both English and Japanese language. The collection was constructed by Kyoko Uyeda, the former president of the Potomac chapter of Ikebana Ikebono Society, over a 40 year period. The collection is a comprehensive collection of works on Ikebana based on information provided by the owner. Because of language barriers, Second Story Books has had difficulty identifying the titles of the books, but has provided clear images of the titles of the books on the spine where applicable. This is the only degree of information that we are able to provide as to the scope and content of the collection. We are offering the collection for physical inspection at our Rockville location or by Zoom as an alternative to a physical written inventory. Second Story Books is offering the collection in its entirety only and welcomes inquiries. Second Story Books is offering this collection in its entirety for $15,000 and applicable shipping costs. To set up an appointment to see the books physically or to set up a Zoom, please contact Allan Stypeck. More

The text block is clean, and the leaves are printed on one side only. The volume presents a number of plates from an earlier dictionary of fine arts, which depict tools, techniques, and studio scenes for various categories of fine art. Condition: Good only. The binding shows minor fraying, scratches, and shelf wear consistent with age. Several plates are detached but present or damaged: “Composition et Expression” has been tipped in and then cut out with no damage to the plate. Plate 1 under Sculpture en Bois [Sculpture in Wood], “Vignette, atelier du sculpteur en boise, et outils,” has been removed and cut into three sections. As it originally depicted three separate images on a single page, only one of the three images was damaged in this process, but the printed title that accompanied the image has been lost. In addition, the final page of the table of contents has been removed and cut down slightly, but the page is tucked into the volume and there is no damage to the text. Two plates are absent from the book. Plate 8 under Gravure en taille-douce [Intaglio], “Gravure en manière de crayon,” has been removed. Plate 38 under Dessin [Drawing], “Proportions de la Vénus de Médicis,” is likewise absent. Dimensions 9.25 x 12 x 1.375 inches. More
