ITEM: 1: Original 1937 poster for the play The Cradle Will Rock for the preview performance to benefit the Brooklyn Eagle strikers. The Cradle Will Rock is a 1937 musical by Marc Blitzstein. Originally a part of the Federal Theatre Project, it was directed by Orson Welles, and produced by John Houseman. The musical is a Brechtian allegory of corruption and corporate greed and includes a panoply of societal figures. Set in "Steeltown, USA", it follows the efforts of Larry Foreman to unionize the town's workers and combat wicked, greedy businessman Mr. Mister, who controls the town's factory, press, church and social organization. The piece is almost entirely sung-through, giving it many operatic qualities, although Blitzstein included popular song styles of the time. The WPA temporarily shut down the project a few days before it was to open on Broadway; so to avoid government and union restrictions, the show was performed with Blitzstein playing piano onstage and the cast members singing their parts from the audience. The Cradle Will Rock was reprised January–April 1938 as part of the first season of the Mercury Theatre, an independent repertory company founded by Welles and Houseman. An abridged version of the production was recorded and released in 1938, the first original cast recording ever made. (attributed to Wikipedia) ITEM 2: Regina (Blitzstein) [signed typed script draft] - About 95 sheets in brown folder, bound with 3 brass brads. Minor age-toning; minor water-staining to bottom corner; signed in pencil across front folder, above typed title; folder spine heavily rubbed/chipped w/ 1” tear along top end & 5” tear along bottom; “4.” typed in top right corner of front cover; folder edgeworn w/ chips/tears. ITEM 3: Mother Courage and Her Children (Brecht, trans. Blitzstein) [photocopy of typed script draft w/ photocopied hand annotations by Blitzstein throughout] - About 85 sheets in black folder with fastener. Minor age-toning, pg edges lightly rubbed; folder rubbed/scratched/edgeworn. ITEM 4: The Threepenny Opera (Brecht, trans. Blitzstein) [mimeograph copy of typed script] - About 80 legal-size sheets in manila folder with 2-prong fastener. Minor age-toning; minor edgewear to pages, w/ slight pencil to about 20pp (fixing faint spots in mimeograph), water-staining to bottom corner; creased corner to title pg; folder heavily rubbed/edgeworn/chipped/torn with loss to spine ends, title in red pencil on front cover and small black-pencil notation, and water-staining across bottom of front cover. ITEM 5: “The Rich” (Blitzstein) [print copy of sheet music for song from The Cradle Will Rock] - Chappell & Co. (New York, 1938). Please see photos in description for details Marcus Samuel "Marc" Blitzstein (March 2, 1905 – January 22, 1964), was an American composer, lyricist, and librettist He won national attention in 1937 when his pro-union musical The Cradle Will Rock, directed by Orson Welles, was shut down by the Works Progress Administration. He is known for The Cradle Will Rock and for his Off-Broadway translation/adaptation of The Threepenny Opera by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill. His works also include the opera Regina, an adaptation of Lillian Hellman's play The Little Foxes; the Broadway musical Juno, based on Seán O'Casey's play Juno and the Paycock; and No for an Answer. He completed translation/adaptations of Brecht's and Weill's musical play Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny and of Brecht's play Mother Courage and Her Children with music by Paul Dessau. Blitzstein also composed music for films, such as Surf and Seaweed (1931) and The Spanish Earth (1937), and he contributed two songs to the original 1960 production of Hellman's play Toys in the Attic.
