An antique plaster portrait bust of George Washington, in the manner of Jean-Antoine Houdon, (1741-1828), on an integral turned socle, with gray surface wash. Houdon’s classical depiction of George Washington as a Roman is among the best known busts of the first president. It was taken from a life mask made by Houdon in 1785 for his full length marble statue that resides in the Virginia State Capitol. A smaller likeness was made by Houdon while still in the United States and presented to Washington. Good plus. Shows light patina and wear overall, with several instances of light plus wear to base, shoulders, hair and nose. Artist: Boston Sculpture Company Makers, (after) Houdon, Jean-Antoine, (French, 1741-1828) Medium: Plaster Date: Early 20th Century Measurements: w 2.5 in x h 29 in x d 11.5 in; 15 lbs. More
