New York; Chicago; Toronto: Fleming H. Revell Co., 1897. 1st. 252 pp. [incl. t.p.]. VG to VG- / no d.j. (as issued). A more or less "tidied-up" edition of a memoir prepared by an early Anglican missionary in the British colony of Sierra Leone during the first decades of the Nineteenth Century, with about 40 pp. of discursive appendices. Internally a very pretty copy of this work; appears to be unmarked and essentially unsoiled. There is a hint of age-toning around the margins of the pages and a bit of dust-soiling at the head of the textblock but no other faults in this regard are evident. the endpapers are a little browned and the paper at the front hinge is just starting to split near the head. Otherwise the original publisher's brown cloth binding with gilt spine & cover titles is in excellent shape: there is a little edgewear, really only apparent at the extreme head & tail of the spine and the points are barely rubbed. Given the book's age, these cosmetic issues are surprisingly minor. Generally a very good copy of a fairly uncommon work. -Shelve Willis Collection next to African section.
