Leksand, Sweden: 1956. Original poster advertising the July 1956 performances of the play Himlaspelet in Leksand, Sweden. Himlaspelet, or The Heavenly Play, by Swedish screenwriter Rune Lindström, recounts a young man’s journey to demand that God return his sweetheart to earth after she is executed for witchcraft. When the young man fails in his quest, it is through his sweetheart’s intervention that the two are reunited in heaven. The play has been performed regularly in Leksand, Sweden since the summer of 1949. The poster is mounted on foam core. Condition: Very Good. Large vertical stain to front board, with light staining overall. Bumping to beveled edges and spine. Light fraying and chipping to head and tail of spine. Text block is shaken, but boards secure. Exterior text block edges are gilt, with light foxing on the interior text block towards front pages. Light age toning throughout. Inscription by the author on free end paper, written "For Colonel Shannon J. Rockwell, With sincere regards of his friends. Elizabeth Bryant Johnston, Washington D.C., February 22nd 1882."
