LETTER FROM NEW YORK CITY FIREMEN TO GOVERNOR GEORGE CLINTON
New York, New York: 1783. 8x14" letter on foolscap signed by 4 engineers representing the engines and companies of New York firefighters and dated 27 November 1783.
The letter seems to be subtly asking for some funding from the state to offset maintenance costs, and is signed by John Balthasor Dash, George Stanton, Francis Dominick and Jeronemus Alstyne. George Clinton was the first governor of New York State and later served as Vice-President under Thomas Jefferson and James Madison.

In excellent condition, with very little separation at the folds except for an inch or two at one of the bottom folds, and the only major flaw being some separation along the left margin where the letter may have been tipped into a book: the letter was originally folded into quarters, the second quarter of the right margin (left from the front, right from the back) somehow got stuck to the top quarter, and at some point when it was unfolded, the second quarter tore loose up to the fold. The letter can be seen in its entirety in the photos, but in order to read the back, one must first read down to the fold, then fold the letter down so that the writing in the right margin shows (see photos). There is also some minor chipping at the top and bottom of the paper.
Otherwise it is supple, sturdy, with very little fading and is very legible.

The salutation begins:
To his excellency George Clinton Esq, Governor of the State of New York in America, etc, etc, etc - May it please your Excellency ...
