London: Bradbury & Evans 1850. First Edition thus. 8vo. First edition in book form. [2],[i]-xiv,[2],[1]-62,[2]pp. Forty etched plates, including frontispiece and added vignette title, by H. K. Browne ("Phiz"). first state of the vignette title, with the 1850 date and with the imprint: Bradbury & Evans, Bouverie Street. matches all first edition points called for in Smith.

Contemporary brown half leather with marbled boards. Blind ruled compartments and leather spine label with gilt titles. Gilt is rubbed. Marbled page edge. Binding is rubbed with splitting to front joint and sunning along backstrip. Offsetting to endpapers. Small dampstain to top edge affecting frontispiece and vignette title. Offsetting to pages opposite plates. Pages mildly toned. some scattered foxing throughout affecting pages and plates. This copy appears to be lacking the half-title page. Overall, a very good copy.

"David Copperfield originally appeared in twenty numbers, bound in nineteen monthly parts, the last part forming a double number, from May 1849-November 1850. It was published in book form on November 14, 1850" (Smith).
